Understanding Bot Traffic in GA4

5 MIN READ

The short version:

Automated traffic (bots) now makes up about half of all web traffic, so every dealership site sees some of it. Dealer Inspire blocks harmful bots before they reach your site, and we deliberately allow the ones that help shoppers find you, like search engines and AI assistants. A small share of bots are built to look like real visitors, so some will still appear in GA4. That’s why we recommend leads, calls, and form fills as the clearest picture of how your site is performing.

Why you may be seeing it

If you’ve noticed a traffic spike in GA4 that doesn’t line up with your leads, calls, or showroom activity, bot traffic is often the reason. It’s a common question, and a fair one. This is happening across nearly every website right now, and it isn’t a sign that something is wrong with your site.

Industry research, including Imperva’s annual Bad Bot Report, estimates that roughly half of all internet traffic is automated. Part of what’s driving the increase is AI. Building a scraper used to take real programming skill. Today, someone can describe what they want to an AI tool and have working code in minutes. Dealership sites are especially common targets because inventory, pricing, and specials are public and useful to a lot of different businesses.

That includes vendors who send you audits or report cards on your website, since grading a site means crawling it. We go deeper on this in our webinar, Make Them Prove It: A Dealer’s Guide to Vendor Claims in the AI Era.

How Dealer Inspire manages bot traffic

We use Cloudflare to identify and block known malicious and unwanted bots before they ever reach your site. That protects your site’s speed and security, and it stops a large share of automated traffic.

By the Numbers: In 30 days (September 25–October 26, 2026), Dealer Inspire blocked or challenged more than 2.3 billion automated requests before they reached dealer websites.

Some automated traffic actually works in your favor, so we allow it on purpose:

  • Search engines like Google crawl your site to rank it.
  • AI assistants like ChatGPT read your inventory so they can recommend your dealership when shoppers ask.
  • Approved partners keep your vehicle listings accurate across the web.

Blocking all bots would make your site harder to find in the places shoppers are searching, so we focus on stopping what’s harmful and keeping you visible.

Why some bot traffic still appears in GA4

GA4 records a visit whenever a page loads the way it would in a browser. Google automatically filters out bots on its industry-standard list. Newer bots, and bots designed to look like real visitors, can still be counted. Google doesn’t offer a way to see or adjust that filtering, which is true for every site using GA4. No analytics platform can guarantee a perfectly clean count.

Reading your data with confidence

Some metrics are much less affected by bot traffic than others:

Most reliableBest viewed as directional
Leads, calls, form fills, chats, appointmentsSessions, users, pageviews, VDP views

Leads and calls come from real shoppers taking action, so they give you the clearest read on performance. VDP views are worth a little extra context: scrapers often target VDPs specifically, because that’s where inventory and pricing live.

How to recognize a likely bot spike

When a spike looks suspicious, these signals help:

What to look atCommon signs of bot traffic
Time on siteMany sessions with 0 seconds or near-zero engagement
Pages per sessionExactly one page, or dozens of pages within seconds
Source and locationA sudden jump from one source, city, or country without a campaign behind it
Device and browserThe same screen size, or an outdated or “(not set)” browser, across thousands of sessions
ResultsTraffic rises while leads stay steady

Any one of these on its own can have other explanations. When several show up together, it’s a good indication the traffic is automated.

If you notice a spike

  1. Compare it to your leads, calls, and form fills for the same dates. If those held steady, the extra traffic likely wasn’t shoppers.
  2. Check with us before making budget or strategy changes based on traffic alone.
  3. Reach out to your Dealer Inspire contact with the dates and traffic source. We’ll look into it with you and help you understand what’s behind it.

We’ll keep blocking harmful traffic and keep you visible to the shoppers and platforms that matter. If questions come up, your Dealer Inspire team is always glad to walk through your data with you.
